The Others — A new European documentary on labour, migration and sustainability

Hakawatifilm presents in Europe The Others, a documentary that examines the hidden realities sustaining one of Europe’s most emblematic agricultural models.

Beneath Europe’s largest sea of greenhouses, Almería breaks export records year after year and has become one of the territories with the highest concentration of agriculture certified as sustainable on the continent. Its products reach millions of consumers across Europe under prestigious eco-labels, presented as a benchmark of ethical production.

In what is known as the “Garden of Europe,” some of the largest areas of certified organic and good agricultural practice crops on the continent coexist today alongside conventional farming.

Trade unions and organisations warn that exploitative practices from the traditional model, which they have been denouncing for years, are now extending into some of these certified farms.

Yet behind this success, thousands of migrant workers live without water or electricity, report labour abuses and, in some cases, extreme violence.

Through first-hand testimonies, clandestine recordings and an investigation developed with the support of the European DignityFIRM project, The Others documents the distance between sustainability as a promise and the social realities that sustain this agricultural model.

The documentary has been presented in Amsterdam and will continue in Brussels within the European institutional and parliamentary dialogue on migration, labour and sustainability.

*The Others is a documentary investigation by Hakawatifilm developed within the framework of the European project DignityFIRM. The film brings together testimonies and field material gathered during Hakawatifilm’s journalistic investigation, alongside the findings of the report. Its purpose is to support the public presentation of DignityFIRM and to raise awareness about the working conditions of migrant workers within European supply chains.
